What is special about Madeira Island for me is the quiet that fortunately hangs on the island. We managed to leave without having any problem without having any difficulty we can go anywhere. My favorite part of the island is the area of Caniçal, I was born in Caniçal, because of the flatter orography and I prefer flatter places. I’m Jonas Ascenção, I’m 51 years old and I like American cars. My taste for cars started when I was little, but my taste for American cars began from a trip I took with my wife to Las Vegas where we saw a Cadillac. When we arrived in Portugal, after a while, we found one on the internet for sale and we decided to buy it. It was funny because I went there twice. The first time I went there I liked the car but was a little disappointed because the car was very, very, very damaged. It’s a car that came from the American continent, more precisely from Canada, and we know that the roads there in the Winter, with the salt, the chassis was completely deteriorated, but since the basic structure of the car, the main parts, was good I still decided to go ahead with the purchase and set out to recover the car which took around two years to put in the state that it is now. American cars have a unique feeling. They are big cars, with a large cylinder capacity as well, we are talking about a car of 6300cc better known as the 390 engines, so a very big motor 325cv factory settings, car with an automatic gearbox that gives us enormous pleasure because it does everything by itself, almost. Due to their orography, they are not ideal cars to use here on the island. However, because they are different and unique, they are special. There is no one who passes by these cars and can’t help but look at. The best roads to drive here with these cars, especially with these cars, are the widest roads. There are roads in Funchal that you can’t get through and even if it passes, it’s a risk, so it’s better not to risk it, I don’t want to damage the car so, it will always be the old roads or the highway, there are no other roads here to use. But one of the most beautiful roads for me it is the road that leads to Caniçal. The reaction is always one of astonishment, because it’s a car that you practically don’t see anymore on the road. They are cars that consume a lot, they are cars that have disappeared over time because of the consumption they had, most people could not maintain them. They ended up sending them all to the scrap metal and this one, let’s say, is blessed because it was saved. Indeed, there are many cars in Madeira, there has always been a passion for motorsport here, it is evident from Rally Vinho Madeira that has been around for many years and since my childhood that we go see the Rally and we are car enthusiasts. I’ve always had a taste for cars, the opportunities arose, I acquired them. This one, the Mercury for example, was acquired even before this one. I tried buying the car for almost a year, after the owner to sell me the car, he said he didn’t sell it and there was a day when he decided to sell. The funny thing is that he only sold if it was a pack of two. He had a 1918 car with wooden rims, a museum car, and he would only sell them both. I didn’t want the 1918 one because it’s a car I couldn’t keep but I wanted this car. So, I bought both, I ended up selling one, which was in good condition, for those who could use it I also purchased and restored the car from scratch, disarmed the whole car and fixed it too. This is a car that belonged to a customer, it was in a scrap yard, there was a scrap yard here in Madeira, so I saw the car, for the first time, inside a container, thrown away, badly treated. I like to have my hands dirty, so the painter does the painting, of course, the painter does the painting. plate but the assembly, the mechanics make sure to do it. So, everything that has to do with mechanics I disarmed and armed, fixed the brakes, fixed the engine, all that I managed to do. Some electricity, always need some help from the electrician, the upholsterer too I have an upholsterer who does all this work and that assembles it but now all that is car assembly I make a point of cleaning and preparing each part to be assembled in the car so that it is as original as possible and as clean and presentable as possible. It’s not easy to restore American cars, everything mechanical, almost everything can be found if not everything now everything that is panels of the car is much more complicated to found. I order them from America and I went there twice to get material and for this car I went there once. There are very few American cars from the 50’s and 60’s in Madeira. From the 50’s, 60’s maybe there is half a dozen more, little more than that. We can see that from exhibitions that take place. American, American from the 50s, 60s there is very little, very little. I got a story of the Cadillac. After the car was ready and we managed to put it working it started to make a lot of smoke And I said, "After the repair, the car is ready and started working, starts to release smoke?" Nobody could stand by the car. I spoke to one, I spoke to the other, no one knew afterwards, I spoke to a friend who had been in Venezuela and told him what was going on. I had repaired everything that was needed, and I didn’t understand why the car was releasing smoke, what was happening. The car has a particularity, inside the carburetor there is a little brass barrel that had gasoline inside and as it had been stopped for a long time, it was entering more gasoline. A very simple thing, which was replacing that little barrel, and the car started working. And I thought the engine had broken down from not running and I thought "That can’t be". The Mercury is a more difficult car to drive, it is a car that it does not have an automatic gearbox, it is a car 4,700cc, a 202. Because it doesn’t have an automatic gearbox, not having power steering, in factory setting it could come with assisted steering, but it was an extra and this one doesn’t bring and I purchased that power steering, I still haven’t put it on the car and I’m going to mount the steering assisted and will, probably, go out more often because the car has a very heavy steering. I think we have an extra love for cars, there are parts we didn’t need to take it to such a big extreme and we send it to sea, for example to have the cars the cleanest and as well presented as possible. not to show, I think it’s for the taste of having, above all, for my part, it’s for the taste of having and looking and see that the car is, at least, very well presented. I know 100% presented, they are old cars, it is very difficult to get them 100% unless they are bought all new parts. Something that is not easy, acquiring parts for the car, for example, this was commissioned new because it doesn’t exist. What exists, is in bad condition, you can buy them but it’s in bad conditions, so it was commissioned. There are pieces I’d like to order, to be made, but are also extremely difficult to do. Fortunately, we have good artisans, mainly on the continent, and we managed to make, for example, these pieces that are difficult to come across even in the North American market since there are few cars of these and many of them are modified, they are no longer the same, some change the front, change a lot in the car. I tried to keep the car as original as possible, because it is within the originality that I like cars. The advice I would give a young person, if he wanted to buy a car, is to buy a car that a car he liked and that has the conditions to be able to keep it above all, isn’t it? So that, the useful life of these machines, can be extended as much as possible.
