[Music] [Music] Mr try what went down in your [Music] head the stars are in the sh [Music] listen to them to them Children of the Night Children of the Night what music [Music] [Music] [Music] the passage 25th anniversary tour is the passage live of for [Music] [Music] [Music] okay hello do you hear me I can hear you how are you oh great I can hear you well too I’m fine you everything is good I was looking for your Skype ID but I think the label forgot to say so okay it’s okay I had yours so fine that’s good how is everything with you all good yeah everything is nice yeah yeah yeah it’s cool that’s good and you know before we talk about passage live uh in 2022 you guys played Portugal uh with moons spell on the anniversary shows of moons spell how did those shows go for you guys oh that was great that was good actually uh we we we did uh one show which was espcially around ceremony of opposite and one show especially on passage uh so they were both different yeah and um yeah both were were were great I mean it was nice to play with moon spell again especially in their home country I mean they’re they’re like Superstar there and um you know they they really welcome us it was really nice yeah cool and uh you know I I saw you guys you know at bloodstock uh that year as well 2022 um I was to play you know a festival you know like blood stock because it’s not too big of a festival but um it’s one of my favorites in Europe to be honest blood stock I was that experience as well for you guys oh that was great I mean we were looking for a long time to play that Festival because this is the first Festival we play in England uh so you know that was something important we played the tent but there were still people coming to to to to the show when we play and I had a good memory I remember it was it was really really hot yeah and we didn’t have a long time to play I think it was like a 405 minute set or something like guess but you know we enjoyed we enjoyed and and I think due to the the extreme heat I was probably enough was probably enough we really gave everything we had you know yeah you know I you know I’m obviously I’m from Portugal and you know I’m used to warm weather but that year at bloodstock it was you know I was suffering yeah so yeah it was crazy anyway and uh you know you guys are coming back to Portugal in August for vagos um what can you expect from uh from the that Festival show you guys have anything special planned what is the idea if you can say what is it we don’t know I mean it’s going to be in August so we still have some time um I I know it won’t be a short on passage I mean it will be like a um you know a set which is going through all um our catalog yeah so but we haven’t decided the sist yet I mean will come in a right time but yeah I mean we we’re looking forward for that Festival I mean um you know I I think last time we play a festival in pogon was probably Laura was something near Porto yeah L nois I think exactly exactly that’s the one and that that was really nice really nice Festival so we’re looking forward to to to be back there on a festival set yeah yeah and you know going to to talk about passage you know 25 years of of that record that ended up changing you know some El’s career in a way obviously you know I remember because ceremony of the Opposites was the first record that I remember listening from samel and um had a big impact and with passage it was a bit different from what we were used to listening to Sam do you remember you know when passage was released Because the Internet wasn’t what it is today any yeah true yeah but you remember you know the fans reaction towards the record did you felt that a lot of fans were angry that you guys changed the direction a bit we didn’t felt that we we didn’t really felt that I mean you know before actually before we we we we got the the album released um we did something like 10 10 shows in in Europe uh I think it was around June and mly festivals and that you know that for us it was the first time we were playing festivals I mean we we we had like you know we were playing club shows and um and yeah okay we we did some kind of Festival you know like the full of Fate Festival in Germany but that was always in in clubs I mean big clubs but still clubs yeah and uh you know we had a chance to play um with full force Festival that there was something in Germany and uh I remember we we were on the same stage done motohead and uh Ministry though we were playing in the afternoon but still you know it was like something really new for us we we had a feeling okay now we kind of of the the the the bigger game and um and that was exciting that was exciting of course yeah I mean yeah yeah you know because you know the sound shifted a bit lyrically you guys shifted a bit as well um and you know I I remember some fans being very annoyed you know I mean you know you won’t play Anybody Everybody all the time that’s for sure so you know it’s not a problem with I don’t have a problem with that and um you know the the main idea was um we had a lineup change after ceremony of opposite and uh we took the the option to to to to go with the drum machine and um that that would not have been a problem just to do it in studio because you know nobody knows how you do it anyway so and it has been baned you know doing this and not saying it before us so so it’s not nothing new about that but our mentality was a little bit different with we we going to integrate this as a a real element and it will happen life as well and that was kind of you know where uh people were not all agree with with our choice I mean the record company they were against the idea the management was was against the idea the agen was booking shorts for us say wow maybe it’s not the great idea but anyway we thought wellow that’s the way we feel you know and and we we’ve been longer uh with with this setup than we ever been with with the drum I mean I think we had like five five five years with with five or six years with with with drum and and uh I know over over 25 years with with drum machine so you know for for us it is an element of the way we we look at the music you know the the the kind of um we it does make a a real a steady and and and a close frame around everything you know especially live I mean there is no no improvisation uh this is close but inside this this this Frame you still have some Freedom yeah what I mean I mean some some men are playing with click I mean some a lot of men now are playing with C so so you you also have you know the the the the the Rhythm will be a certain thing and and especially if you play with samples and and um and backing track then then then you have the same problem you you canot really um um have improvisation I mean it will be what it is yeah and and I kind of of like that because uh I know with guitar I don’t really have you know any chance to to move it anywhere uh and that especially when we started up doing this it was very different for me because you know usually if I would do like a bit of a mistake I mean I could always you know C could always kind of uh find a way to to to make it happen like it was not a mistake yeah but but but then with the drum machine this is Merc I mean you had to be tight you have to play exactly what you’re supposed to do I still have some Freedom with my vocal though cuz you know I don’t need to do it to do it exactly the way it is on the record so I don’t feel too too constrained by by by this um this thing yeah yeah and at the end of the day technology is there for people to use it you know and you know I have no issues if anyone wants to you know use technology for you know it’s at the end of the day you’re an artist and you’re entitled to your creative you know freedom to I agree to create music and you know if people don’t like it they can go suck an egg or something like that you know it’s just I mean there is enough band who have a traditional traditional setup so if this is really a problem well then okay I mean I’m I’m fine with people not not wanting to to listen to us because you know we we are cursed yeah and uh you know obviously you just recorded the live album is coming out soon um do you feel a difference when you play those songs live now from When You released the album 25 years ago yeah I mean of course we were more confident and we we I mean it’s more flowing we we don’t have to you know we were especially me I mean I was pretty much gripped to to to to to to the songs when when when it was the time that we were touring for passage you know as I mentioned you know the the the fact that that every song was was uh not moving anywhere uh was kind of difficult because you cannot pretend that somebody else did something wrong I mean it’s all on you and you you had to adapt I mean it’s kind of it’s a big like feeling being in a dictature so to speak you know there is no freedom and you have to learn to to to find a certain Freedom inside that frame that’s what I was saying before and um and yeah I mean it was a process but but that was our choice so you know we could have thought well okay let’s go back to to the the transitional set up but we didn’t want it to do that yeah and I like the way it is I mean I like the way we sound live um the S of change a little bit with the time you know um the the the sample of the drum I mean certain we keep the same one because they’re very typical of you know for for example I don’t know I I got this song Angel decay in mind and there is a special song of drum at the beginning so so that we we will not touch but yeah for the rest I mean we can have a different snare song and and you know try to to find out to define a sound that that fit the moments at this game do you ever felt you know do you have a feel sometimes tempted to to change you know the songs I I know obviously for for a band for an artist you know when they finish the song is as finished as it could be sometimes when a band plays it live they realize that you know slight things can change and then they adapt to song but do you ever felt tempted to change you know a song little things you know little things we did but but but people don’t really realize it and that’s fine I mean rain for example the opening track of the album has changed a lot through through the years I mean we were gradually upgrading the tempo and it was going faster and faster at some point with well we we kind of lose it now I mean it it’s good because it remembers you when when you have a real drummer without a click yeah if if the excitement is really there it will play faster anyway you know that that that’s a fact but but so so knowing that because we we had an experience with with the the traditional setup we thought wow okay so so we’re just going to you know speed it up a little bit and then we we came back it’s it’s a tiny little faster than than on the original but it’s not much anymore because we thought well the song was kind of losing his his his own personality it was trying to to be something else and um and yeah yeah there’s always little details here and there you know maybe this part could be a bit longer or so um uh slower we also do that you know when it’s very heavy you think ah maybe just adapt a little bit Yeah and and that’s by playing live that you know how to do this yeah and um yeah and as well something I can mention about this this live recording um which for me I hear the difference I don’t know if people will really pay attention to that but we we we did uh play ceremony of opposite entirely um few years ago and at that time we came back to the the the the tuning of that album which is C SHP and uh and we kept that tuning for for every other show that we did since um and when we did the passage thing we thought okay well let’s do it that way so I mean it’s half tone down from the the D because it was the original uh the album and I think to me it sound heavier I mean it’s it’s really not much but but that that tiny little little difference make a difference at least to my ear and I like it yeah you know I think you know with way people consume music these days I’m not sure if they will I know I know most people probably won’t notice but you still have those audio file you know fans that they have a nice sound system and stuff like that they probably will realize you know that slight difference and they really appreciate that you know I I I’m sure that’s that’s you know what uh what happened and you know how important was passage for some El’s career I think was a turning point I mean the the two albums ceremony and passage they were both like very important album on ceremony I mean this is C start doing all the music and and that was a very big Turning Point the album is is a lot more um varied than than what we were doing before um we had a keyboard on every song so so the the the kind of I’m not going to say symphonic because it’s not really something we were looking for but but there were some influence of you know a sort of grounder that we were looking uh that we found in classical music we wanted to integrate this in the music so so that was kind of a turning point already and and then you know of course passage with you know some some industrial influences that that are more um that are easier to to to hear than it was already on ceremony but I think on passage it’s more of views um some electronic of course because of the drum machine then you know it makes sense to to to use Some Loops because you can just you know program it and and and throw it in in the mix so yeah I mean I think those two album probably Define our sound throughout the the the the following years I mean even today I mean we we actually working on new material and it’s still related to those two album somewhere you know of course we not trying to to duplicate that but but that gave us kind of a start uh Ground Zero back then yeah and you know speaking of new material obviously the last record Desman was released in 2017 so almost like it’s been a long time seven years yeah it’s been a long time but but we don’t really feel that the time is Flowing that fast but but yeah I agree with you but um at least you know we some of the song that we were working on that they’ve been in into the third um life already you know changed so so it’s good that we haven’t recorded this before because they would have been just the first version and now we we got like we thinking wow okay yeah that was worth coming back to those material and trying to to to do something again you know so I think now it’s time I mean we we we won’t take forever so we we already record some stuff and we going to record after um p on in Japan we will have some time there so so that will be the the moment where we we’ll try to finish this album and and if everything goes well and I really hope it will uh I hope we we we had at least one song that we can release this year and and then the whole album at some point on 25 cool and you know when you play like passage from start to finish as you did with ceremony does that tend to influence the songw writing process for the in this case for the next record does that influence you guys a bit or you can you know distance yourselves from that I mean it could actually could uh because you don’t really know you it’s already difficult to to to know where you’re infuence are coming from you know usually if you can’t tell it’s probably wrong because you think oh okay well then then it’s just like a copycat sort of thing so so you you try to avoid that uh you know even if you come from another band you’re trying a RI and goes like Oh I like this and then ah it sound like something so so it’s no longer uh an option yeah so I mean if we would have you know found out that that something was really sounding like passage will W okay well let’s keep that for for in the past and and try to move forward with something else so I I don’t think but but most probably I mean there is something because what you listen what what you into at the moment have an influence I’m I’m sure about that so so yeah I don’t know how much but most definitely yeah yeah does uh you know because you know some people think you know to write the song it’s easy but as you were saying you know some songs they they go through the different life forms so to say and they you know they change a lot uh does it does it is it difficult for you guys to finish a song is it a difficult process or it’s just a natural thing that you guys like want always to improve and that’s why it takes a long time I think it depend from one person to another but if I just talking about myself I mean because my my Inman in the band it’s about writing the lyrics putting the the the vocal line on it uh the title and you know that that that that’s that part more about the the writing um lyrics I mean the music is really business and we of course discuss the whole thing within the band and listen to the stuff before it is finished and I like to finish thing you know so so so I’m never going to let something um unfinished so so for for me it’s okay where it start to be a problems it’s when when you got the feeling okay I’m done with this it is perfect we listen to it together and somebody points something like this is not good nah really or you know it could be whatever the title of the song for example you know no this is this is not a good title definitely not this is not the title for a song yeah you have to come back to to to to to your table and and goes like okay I thought it was good but apparently um you know so I had to work on it again yeah and and that that’s kind of it’s not what I enjoy the most I I enjoy the creative part but but once it is that that is work you know that is really work that is like okay now I had to find something else and and it’s okay I mean I understand and at the end I’m always happy because you know I know I had the first version and I had a new version so I can compare I know well okay they they were right they were right my my title was silly or it was meaningless compared to what I’m coming with now and as you change the title you might as well change part of the lyrics or eventually the chorus or or this and and then all of a sudden the song shift somewhere else and you’re like whoa oh yeah I haven’t seen this coming really like it that way and yeah were they ever wrong sorry were they ever wrong you know when they said like we don’t feel yeah well I mean yeah kind of I mean it’s not wrong it’s like when you come with another version and you’re thinking well I’m not even sure it’s better then there there might be a third you know third path and maybe maybe a compromise between the two not exactly maybe something absolutely different and this is how you you move forward I mean at least for me and um and they were not wrong because they they question it and uh they P me to go further um so I never consider wrong as as a thing you know it’s just like you got more option because the first option is always there yeah yeah so you remember you can compare and you’re like okay well this is this is old story already you know this the album we should have recorded two years ago but but now it’s no longer the the case so yeah and do you do need the music to be finished in a way to write the lyrics you know to get the vibe to get the feeling to write the lyrics and um and the vocal Melodies do or or are you able to let’s say write a lyric with a with a vocal line with a vocal Melody and then adapt to a song does that happen don’t really have a formula because CU yeah it happened that you for example for that album I had some material that I wrote without vocal life but I had material and um and it’s not a song it’s like verse and and I got a lot and all of a sudden I make a you know I decide okay this is useless this is just repetition but but less good than than the first so so I I I kind of condense what I got and wait for the music and sometime I can use some of that you know or or just I use it as an influence for for for for um for for the world that that that that that uh writing create you know it’s like okay it’s a canva and and now I’m going to try to to to develop something else out of that but yeah or else I also I also have sometime you know I I just got the song and I got nothing I sto with nothing so I just in that case I I try to to find the line not the word the line so so I know what I need I know how much uh material I need and and then then I I I work on on the material but uh but I know the the the length and more or less where I want to go and and then I try to to to write either a story or or just an expression of what I feel about the song yeah yeah do you remember any song that was really fast when you got the music and you wrote the lyrics and the vocal Melodies that was really easy to come out of you the first one I remember like that was to get better from Eternal album it just went like I don’t know I mean one hour I had the whole thing uh and then for the Same album because now my mind is is around that time uh I think Super Karma took me forever because I didn’t know what to do with that song I thought it should be an instrumental and and you know I was really struggling so so yeah it depends I mean for for the last album well for the last album that wasn’t same thing again we we some of the song they had many stories you know like the song Samuel was got another title and then it changed so uh but the first the the the first um stroke was kind of fast but then I had to rework on it because it was not accepted the way it was so but I agree I mean I’m happy the way it is now so you know it’s all good yeah very good so uh you know the idea is to try to record the new record this year still and then release next year y yeah that’s the plan I mean I don’t know about the release I don’t know but but I know we want to finish the album this year and we actually want to finish most of it before the summer because then then there will be other things coming and you know we we we don’t want to mess up so yeah yeah very good but we’ve started already so so you want so yeah something we’ll see the light of the still these here maybe a song as you were saying early and you know hopefully the album you know next year maybe if you guys are really really fast maybe this year we can still hear the full thing who knows yeah yeah cool very good well I look forward to see you guys again in Portugal in the summer at vagos metal Fest and uh you know yeah I I’ll see you there and um you know passage obviously as I said ceremony was a more impactful record for me because it was the first but the passage obviously you know it’s a great record was the turning point in a way for Sam and uh this live record sounds really good always enjoy watching you guys live so uh you know I’ll See You in the Summer and uh you know hopefully we’ll talk soon enough for the next record all right yeah hopefully hopefully yeah right V thank you very much for your time and you know I’ll see the summer all right thank you thank you very much byebye yeah bye byebye [Music] [Music] records [Music] [Music] [Music] Children of the Night you will live through the sentury is to come and I have left good night good night
