[Music] [Music] Mr trow what went down in your [Music] head the stars are in the sh [Music] listen to them to them Children of the Night Children of the Night what music the last and ring Phoenix music [Music] Anderson for LOL Park Spirit Box [Music] body and hello there hello Martin how are you hey good how are you man everything is good how you doing busy good yeah yeah sorry I’m a bit late but I had the other interview was a bit late as well so yeah it’s okay how is everything all good all good man thank you excited for the release of the album even though it was delayed for six weeks now so it’s only November that the fans will have the chance to hear the whole thing how do you feel about I mean I feel good I’m excited to share it with all the people that likes the band you know but yeah unfortunately this thing happens you know nowadays uh the manufacturing of the viny is the the reason so yeah it will be okay I think yeah yeah it’ll be worth the wait for what I’ve listened it’s going to be worth the weight absolutely so it’s going to be nice and uh when did you guys finish recording the album uh I mean we were in the Studio I think was February um and we were there two weeks at Rockfield Studios um so yeah that was pretty much it how long did you take the songwriting process uh I think it took I can’t remember exactly when the first song was written but six months maybe something like that yeah yeah and you know one of the things the people are you know obviously glowing about especially the old school opets fans are the grows you know personally I could do without it you know you know I’m I like it anyway but I really enjoy the last few records from opth where there clean vocals and I I really enjoy that Vibe on the record but um did Michael told you about you know going back to the growls um I was that um it was just a natural thing that happened during the songwriting I mean yeah I mean we were we were talking about that uh during the last H tour for the last album we always kind of talk what we’ll do in the future you know and it felt right the time to experiment with yeah with some more heavy sounds in a way and um once he wrote the first songs and add the grows and fit with his um Vision with the the story of the album you know um because the girls is kind of taking care of one character of of the story it felt really felt really really good you know so everybody in the band was like yeah yeah this is the right direction to take today at least so yeah we were excited to to experiment once again with rounds yeah and obviously you know with the the last tour that you guys did it was like a fan request you know set list so there was a lot of um like old gems that were brought back so that kind of spiced things up a bit I guess yeah I mean the album was was already done by then but yes I mean is people always like old stuff of course but yeah I mean we always enjoy playing those songs we we never stop playing those songs really you know people are sometimes kind of forgetting that we never stop playing songs like Deliverance The Falls or live you know so so we really enjoy playing uh the heavy part as well yeah I think people need need to go to the shows again you know so they see that you guys are still playing those songs yeah yeah sure instead of being at home just listening to the new record and say where are the GRS where are their life on the other songs go listen yeah and you know the the concept was something the concept of the album was something that started from the beginning uh it was already the idea to write a concept record what was something that developed throughout the songwriting process I I think that developed during the the writing process but it came pretty early on uh I think U Michael had idea pretty early once he was writing the songs and so I guess that helped him to kind of take a direction as well with the with the music yeah and uh you know on the album you have a few guests one of them obviously Ian Anderson from Jetro to you know he plays the flute he does a bit of the voice as well on the album how was it to have you know someone so iconic on on the album it’s not it must not been very easy to to get him to do the job I would say no I mean it’s amazing it’s like a something that I never even dream about it because it’s is such a legend you know and in the music history so it’s amazing to to have him and I like I said I mean he never came to the studio so he recording his own Studio his b you know and we never met him personally but yeah it’s such an honor to have him you know same as Joey tempers you know from Europe who’s such a big start you know so it’s like yeah it’s amazing yeah and Joey was in the studio with you guys no no no not either rock stars you know they like to record in their own Studios yeah yeah yeah technology man well you know it’s a good thing about you know technology obviously where you can records you know in the comfort of the bedroom or the sitting room whatever and uh for you guys when you guys write do you guys write individually or you guys get together uh to do the writing process no the writing of the songs is only Michael he at his home studio and then um we get the songs and I personally kind of remake all the baselines in a way to try to to add something uh for the music music but uh the the song writing is is only Michael yeah and uh you know the album starts with a great basine from you on paragraph one that sets the tone for the whole record um what what is normally your base approach your playing approach when it comes to to to the music because you know it’s something that I’m very interested about because you know we could see guys like Billy Sheen playing one style you know get they leave from Rush playing you know style as well then you have you know Bas players that just play along with the drums or you know and sometimes the Bas kind of disappears but your Bas sound is very present in the in the music what is the approach normally for your playing when it comes to opth or generally I mean generally I think I’m the kind of based player that I like and I want to play for the songs always I never try to do something just to show off or just you know to to be more uh present um in the music uh I think is something that is very very important for me and for the open sound as well um so I always try to uh never overplay to anything ER never disturb the song the The Voice the vocals or you know a Melody but also I also like to make this the base um present in the music to add something in the music you know so it’s like a kind of I need to compromise a little bit um I like to be H and I like to to to put colors in the music but not overplaying you know so it’s a combination that you you need to be careful to to yeah to to do the right thing all the time you know uh I like to play like melodic but at the same time very groovy um so yeah I need to I like to be of course with the drums but also sometimes follow the The Melodies um and and add something different to the rest that make kind of dation to um to the music you know yeah and you know obviously when when it comes to mixing an album there’s you know frequencies you know and are you guys always careful with that for you know for things not to get lost during the mix because when you listen to to the album you know there’s a lot of stuff going on there’s strings there’s a flute there’s obviously the guitar melodies the vocal de Bas drums so you know it’s a lot of music and a lot of frequencies that sometimes can overlap but you don’t want to mix in a way that some of those get lost I you guys always pay careful attention to that for you especially like as a Bas player trying to get Hur because I know some musicians hate when they cannot hear themselves on yeah yeah of course you want to be heard because yeah I think it’s it’s part of the music you know H but it’s a compromise as well because sometimes you you understand that it’s not possible that you be everything is going to be Hur you know it’s not it’s like that you know it’s not everything I’m playing is H you know in a way because it’s so much layers so much stuff going on but it’s you know it’s you need to be for the team you know in a way so just the best possible um because if you put the base really loud you’re going to destroy the whole mix of course so you don’t you don’t want to do that um so it’s it’s a compromise and it’s I think it’s for every instrument in a way you know besides Drums of course is most you can really hear it because it’s more loud and vocals and stuff but the rest is yeah you need to compromise away a bit yeah you know sometimes when I listen to a lot of new records sometimes the mix you know I I get a bit confused because everything is so loud and everything seems to be on the same level that it’s hard to understand what is really going on in the little details I mean obviously in general you can hear everything but you know sometimes I I think just I really like the 80s 7s 80s mixes because you know there’s less Slayers obviously but you can hear everything and there’s breathing room for everyone yes yes I agree I mean we try to have this kind of um sound more natural sound with Dynamics you know for us it’s really important um but yeah I mean the modern kind of music is is everything is on top you know really loud and if you see the the the audio wave is just like all the time the same it looks the same you know it’s like a big junk so yeah I mean you lose the the Dynamics that way you know you get more more yeah aggressive in a way more loud but you you lose the these Dynamics on the kind of natural sound you know organic sound yeah uh so we try to to compensate a little bit with that you know try to be a little bit of course modern as well but have this organic kind of mixes yeah and you know obviously being a concept record um do you guys have intention to play the whole record from start to finish I’m sure you guys have a tour now in the US in October since the album was delayed I don’t think that will happen but next year for the European tour with grand Magus um do you think it’s a possibility to play the old record from start to finish I don’t think that’s a plan really and um and it will be very very difficult for some songs as well uh because all the arrangements the strings and everything um but I think the idea is to play a few songs of course uh as many as possible but I don’t think we will do the the entire album not yet at least not yet yeah and you know with the the tour that you guys did that was obviously the fans that I we spoke about the fans chose the set list there was you know a lot of surprises there when it comes for for the upcoming tour uh you guys have any idea what you guys want to play when it comes to you know the more old school stuff are you guys going to focus more on the more recent records and the new one I mean it’s going to be a mix of course uh we will do some new songs but we will still playing of course all songs um so going to be a mix we will add some new songs uh that we haven’t played in in a long time for this store for example but we always bring a a few you know songs that we haven’t play in very long time so it kind of get a little bit fresh the set list but some of the songs will be the same of course yeah is there any song that you have to play that you go like [ __ ] not again this one not really I mean we I still enjoying a lot to play songs like demon of the fall and deliverance like we always do you know it’s still fun and I think people like to hear it as well so yeah I mean it’s fun yeah is there any any song particularly that you would like to play from the opest catalog that you guys haven’t played is there any song that you would like to see you know being brought to the set list uh I mean I will by this time I think we we have covered almost every song in the the whole entire um discography and beside some from the first two records um but I would like I don’t know I mean I always enjoy bringing up all stuff as well uh maybe some songs from my maybe with we haven’t played in a very very long time songs like April eal or when you know um but yeah it’s a few that we haven’t played in a very very long time um but yeah I mean it will it will happen at some some point yeah and you know we talked about technology when it comes for the live setting for to play Live uh what’s normally your rig do you like to still play with the you know analogic stuff like prop ramps and you know pedals or you Embrace technology with the you know camper stuff whatever you know musicians use these days yeah no no we we use amplifiers cabinets and pedals so we still the old style in a bit yeah it’s it still sounds better then like those digital you know presets plugins and stuff did you feel that it’s still better sounding than you know these new technological advances I mean some of the new stuff are really impressive really good you know but I think still you can hear a difference you know when you use pedals and amplifiers especially tube amplifiers um I don’t think the digital is matching that kind of sound you know especially the sound we want to have in this band if you are band any other band like this more modern kind of metal or something maybe if it’s better with digital but for us really makes the difference to use analog stuff yeah and you like to have the the son of the amp coming you know eating you in the back most of the time yes I mean I we playing with in ear but I still have the the amplifier in the back and I I put the the the volume as loud as I can hear it and feel it from my back of course yeah yeah I really like to feel it is there like um you know is there like a threshold a limit for volume for the amps from everyone on stage is there like um do you guys have to because you you said the in ears but you still have the sound coming from the amp you know lower probably than normal uh is there like a threshold like a limit for everyone to have the amp sound yes especially for guitars and keyboards sometimes uh because when you play in like kind of in clubs for example H it it does affect the the out sound and the PA sound if you are too loud because people that stand in front of for example guitar play and it’s too loud you you will have a lot of guitar and you will lose a little bit of the PA so so we need to to be careful with that and yeah the sound guy is always doing sound check telling us that is to it’s okay it’s too loud or whatever you know usually usually it’s when it’s guitars and keyboards that came came through more than other stuff yeah you know one of the complaints I have with the new technology it’s when you are in the club uh watching a band that plays All Digital there’s no amps on stage and you’re really in the front of the stage like first row the only thing you can hear is drums drums yeah yeah that happens yeah you know I the bands can hear everything because they have the ears and all that which is great but for the fan perspective in the front you know I I go to smaller shows and clubs and there’s new bands playing with all these you know digital stuff and I cannot hear anything you know it’s just like the drums sometimes I hear the vocals you know but that’s it it’s awful it’s horrible you know bring the amps back on stage yeah yeah or put the PA more to so people can hear it yeah yeah yeah yeah that mean I think it’s a transition time with that you know so maybe um the clubs needs needs to adapt also how how they they angle the the PA you know because as you say you lose a a lot of stuff you know when you are in certain points of the in the audience and that’s no good I mean yeah the small clubs are awful for that because they normally just have the speakers on the side you know pointing to the back of the club and whoever is in the front nothing years nothing anyway and you know you guys already have this tour for the us then you got Europe early next year um what are the plans for the rest of Europe so to say and the rest of the year for opth in 2025 well I mean we definitely need to to to do a second European round at some point um we have we don’t know yet when it’s going to happen but for sure it’s going to happen because right now we are only covering a few countries from the continent so we need to especially go more South and and and so yeah it will be at some point but I don’t know when yet and festivals as well next year yeah yeah yeah summer festivals as well yeah yeah it’s going to be busy year for you guys it’s going to be busy yeah yeah and bus is good Martin thank you very much for your time all the best for opth and the last wheel and testament great record you know it’s good to hear the growls back as I said I wouldn’t mind if it was just normal vocals anyway but you know it’s good for a change as well from the last few records and it probably makes sense with the the story line that goes on on the record so uh you know I think fans are going to love it I mean they’re already as soon as they heard the first single they’re going crazy so you know it’s going to be nice Martin thank you very much for your time all the best and I hope to see you guys soon in Portugal all right see you man thank you so much bye- bye bye bye bye [Music] metal glal metal [Music] global for [Music] [Music] oh Children of the Night he will live through the
