The 2.0l turbo in this car wasn’t “their own” engine, it was a GM Ecotec unit used in the Pontiac Soltice GXP, the Saturn Sky Redline and the Chevrolet Cobalt SS among other cars.
There is a difference between cheap and affordable, and this car is on the very cheap side.
