[Music] [Music] Mr trow what went down in your [Music] head the stars are in the sh [Music] listen to them to them Children of the Night Children of the Night what music J Michel [Music] Jake sounds of the Forgotten wave record [Music] Jake of the Forgotten witherfall new metal glal glal hello hello hey Joseph who are you what’s going on Jake is coming he’s he trying to log in very good how is everything with you good I’m good just working you know how it is trying to push the ball forward yeah that’s well we have to do what we have to do right I mean I mean we’re not born rich or anything so you know we need to make a living anyway I think Jake is coming now so yeah I mean some people don’t continue he Jake cheers hey now how are you hey good man how are you everything is good you guys can hear me okay yes yes all right okay so we’re going to start and before we talk about the new record um let’s talk about the label that you guys created to release a record because it’s kind of a bold move in my eyes to to do that but but what was the reason first and foremost to create the label to release the new album well I mean we we started out as independent we released nocturns and Rec independent I think a bolder move would have been to keep giving all of the revenue to Sentry media yeah I mean frankly like we were also we like to have a lot of control over what we do and it seemed like they were just kind of getting annoyed by how much control we wanted and we want to keep we want every you know we want every eye dotted every T crossed and it seemed like they were just not really they were just getting annoyed by us by by asking for you know just common stuff you know so it’s like why why when we make our records we we always put in more money than the label had ever given us you know so we were basically giving them a product too you know that that frankly was cost way more you know and like Joseph was saying the the way that the the contract was which was actually a pretty good contract but still you know um it just makes more sense for us to put that much money in and then own everything 100% yeah and uh you know obviously things have changed you know labels regardless whatever label it is it physical sales are not what they used to be for you know for for bands or anything and one of the things I realized with witherfall for this record you guys put out a lot of singles before the record um is that way the market works these days you know singles uh just individual songs no no I think people are are misconceiving why we’re doing this so we actually sell quite a bit of physical product it’s our that’s our biggest thing that’s our bread and butter the thing is is that the rest of the industry they’re not paying the fees that are associated with being able to monitor how much physical product the band sells right like in the United States gaining access to luminate which used to be sound scan costs thousands of dollars a year and your average like booking agent concert promoter is not paying five grand a year so they can see how successful a band really is right they’re looking at Spotify numbers that’s it it it’s so we’re like we need to get these numbers up just for that sake alone like we don’t really give [ __ ] like how many people casually and randomly listen to our songs if they’re not fans like cares right that’s that’s the the ecosphere over there on the streaming platforms but the reality is is that all of the industry does look at it and they use that as a metric and it’s a flawed metric but it’s still the reality yeah yeah and I think like as you know what everything Joseph said you know we we totally went in but also it’s kind of cool to have each song have its moment and Spotlight whereas sometimes three songs go out there um it it and and that’s it those are the only ones that people get into and it’s not like we’re just putting out when we do a record we don’t have any filler you know on our stuff every single song is we we we put 100% into it so we want our fans to to have those as well whereas sometimes you might have you definitely have the fans that listen in the record all the way through but you also don’t and like Joseph’s mentioned before we had vintage which is off of the shirt that Joseph’s wearing right now uh that song is uh a fan favorite of witherfall but only fans know about it you know because it wasn’t like pushed out there as a single where I think it would have done a lot better and maybe gotten us more exposure had it been that way um you kind of had to be a fan to to find out about that song so that’s one reason why we wanted to do it I know it pissed off a lot of fans but they’ll get over it they probably forgot about like pissed off it pissed off for viewers in itag basically didn’t it didn’t real fans they’re excited to [ __ ] hear a new single and you know if you want to you want to hear the whole thing all at once then don’t listen to them don’t watch the videos and then wait for release day like it’s not that hard you know and to me that’s a positive sign if they’re so agitated that there’s a new witherfall song but they don’t want to listen to it because they want the whole experience like then do us a favor and go stream the old catalog while you wait for your CD vinyl like you know what I mean it’s like when you start seeing uh like you know Christmas ads in July yeah but no no dude it’d be like complaining to your wife that she like flashed you her tits while you were like you know like at dinner or something and he’s like oh no don’t flash me your tits until I can [ __ ] you later like that’s [ __ ] [ __ ] like what kind of Life are these people living that they complain about things that are like a net positive in their life you know people just like to complain anyway I think the way the internet is these These Days people just like to complain because you know they have a platform they have a forum to to complain and you know that’s what you do you know for me as a music fan I I prefer you know the the physical product and you know I’m going to wait for the vinyl to be released I think it’s just at the end of this month that is coming out there was a slight delay no it’s out it’s out there was there was a a massive interest in it and the the the uh distributor didn’t print enough product so it was some people have it it’s out yeah no when I was going to order it was just for the end of June so I’m waiting for the end of June yeah but yeah it was sold out before release day over in Europe like that’s how it’s frustrating because like I think three days before the release dat like all of a sudden now like Amazon wouldn’t have any more in stock until like June 14th and then it was June 3 first and then it started going into July but I think they were able to get more more stock and I think they had some importing issues some some customs issues yeah that’s frustrating because it’s confusing as [ __ ] for all of our fans you know the release date never changed like that was what was the noise like no the release date never changed we it’s we were getting some emails in America I’m like we not we’re not releasing the record in America we have a distributor in Europe like that’s not like that’s nothing to do with us it’s crazy yeah yeah but that happened with centry media too uh they they had a vinyl uh they didn’t get the the record to the the vinyl um Manufacturing Company in time and then like the vinyls came out like a month after the CDs was that on Prelude or curse Jake I don’t remember it was one of them yeah it might have been curse because it was also during the pandemic and there was a to get vinyl at that point was ridiculous it was like like a 9 month uh you know waiting process or some [ __ ] but I mean yeah it’s just I wish that the distribu you know I we had a date set and then it’s just yeah I feel bad for the fans because they are confused I’m [ __ ] confused too and I look at the emails every day they are streaming it more I’ll the only positives right but in America it’s all shipped out everything even if you were from website like and you’re in [ __ ] turkey like you got your record now like I I’m streaming on my you know I’m streaming it so I’m just waiting for the physical stuff I have I got all the the vinyls anyway so I need to have the vinyl so yeah I I did just see that um uh a couple of people of our fans in in Europe are getting the ones they ordered from I think napom was doing it like I think they they are being shipped out right now so I I was looking at the nuclear blast shop and uh I think it’s June 23rd the date they have for the for the Wither fall vinyl so they they didn’t order enough and they sold out it’s it’s crazy it’s a good thing yeah it’s a good problem yeah and you know going to to the record when did you guys actually start writing for the for the album we don’t stop writing that’s the thing like we actually have songs for the next record while we were writing uh sounds of Forgotten you know like there it’s a ever evolving continuing process but yeah we we we started I mean like we finished curse uh recorded that in 2020 and then we started working on this one right after that like pretty much a few months later you know so it was uh we didn’t have any songs though from curse that bled into sounds um but yeah I I think we we had yeah we started writing pretty much immediately Joseph was coming down to Florida where I was at and um and and that’s the thing too is everyone we get a lot of interviews where people are like what the hell took you guys so long we had we had sounds written in uh about like it was finished in 2022 um and then we had the record ready for delivery by June of 2023 but we wanted to hold off on it you know um just for the you know like we were going with the right time for it we had some touring opportunities and stuff too and then we were like tours just getting cancell we’re like [ __ ] this We’re not gonna wait for some other [ __ ] ban to decide when we’re goingon to release our own record like we’re gonna do fine you know that absolutely had a lot to do with with uh if if you want to call it you know lack of momentum is Jake and I could go in and write a record and and record it in six seven eight months like no problem every time but then we get like everg gray we had an everra tour book that got cancelled and rescheduled like three times so it’s not like we can go in book studio time when we have the tour and then it gets cancelled and it’s like that whole plot of time is is gone you know it’s I don’t know I all right process is so fluid though like I think Jake just kind of said that that’s when like the the only real point of demarcation in time for when we start a new record is when the old one is finished so the day that we finish the old one is the day that we started the new one really like that’s and and when you guys are writing you know a song um like what have you done it’s like 10 minutes long when you start writing do you know the song is going to be that long or it’s something it’s a very natural process that just develops into that because I know there bands especially the prog ones where they say I want to write a 20 minute epic and no matter what happens it’s going to be 20 minutes long how does it work normally with his long songs I don’t I don’t think it I don’t think it starts that way I think it it’s kind of like when your day starts going arai and you’re like oh this is going to be a long day like that’s how the [ __ ] songs end up because we we start out just writing music and then like things just kind of get murky like all of a sudden then you know like like with Tempest that was like a pretty straightforward straightforward right even with like all the weird time signat here and Tempo CH that was like a pretty standard like intro Verse Chorus like thing when we were first started writing it and then it just became this huge 9 Minute track like it just we just kept going with it you know it’s nothing’s intentional yeah and you bring up what have you done because what have you done was an interesting one um that song the way that that was written was kind of like unlike anything else we’ve kind of written because it took a long that song needed to breathe and by what I mean by that is like it needed to do its own thing like we would write a bit of it and then we’d be like all right we got to move on to something else we’d write three other songs and then come back to it a few months later and then be like okay here here’s where it’s at um so that one was like Joseph was saying something like Tempest off our previous record came just like that like it was same thing as Insidious you know those songs come there’s songs like that that are just like come out of you and it’s pretty much whole whereas what have you done had to take a lot of time to to become its thing and then but but with the song links we don’t ever really think about that it’s like that song we just knew it had to have it had to go it had to take you on a journey and where that Journey was gonna be was sad and so it was like you know we needed that time to to really let it do it otherwise I think it would have come out a little bit if we didn’t have that and we just kind of wrote like [ __ ] we got to get this thing done which we never do but if it had been like that it would have turned out something different and I think the fans would have the listeners would have it wouldn’t have been natural so I mean to answer your question all the [ __ ] that we do is just it’s just natural it’s not like oh we need to write a 15 minute long song we have to have an epic on this record no it just it comes out that way but but I I do know that we knew that was going to be the last song on the record though from just when we were starting it there was something bombastic about it yeah that and I didn’t finish the lyrics until literally like the day I recorded [ __ ] thing um you know due to the sensitive subject matter of it yeah that was an interesting track just all in general writing we kind of wrote that song Jake like while we were writing the other songs it was like in the background waiting to like because you know like I said we usually will have a verse melody in the chorus like immediately and that’s how we know it’s something we’re going to work on like that’s usually how how it’ll start it’s like the Riff will be there or a chord progression and and the chorus will be there and the the verse but that one was not like I didn’t even have the verse verses written until literally like three days before the record was completed like it was just marinating and that’s kind of how the song was in general like we would leave off like how we were going to link the ending to the other sections and you know yeah it was yeah it’s right because we had we had the verse we had with the intro which is also a take on the chorus you know or vice versa I have however the hell you want to think about it and then we had the verse the music aspect to it and then we had the ending we’re like how the [ __ ] does we get over here because way different you know and then so um but it’s like we all knew it was going to be part of the song and we had to figure out you know musically and and make sure it doesn’t sound stupid to get over to that part you know so it it was an interesting one it’s funny that you mentioned that one because we don’t really have a real answer to that thing you know yeah and you were saying you me you said word you mentioned word sad on the on that song but actually the ones that the one that brings me a bit more sad and a bit more down in a good way was where do I begin I don’t know what what’s happening in that song it made you know what the [ __ ] you wrote about it you know I just got memories from you know people that are no longer here with me and you know I was like what the [ __ ] is this music is doing to me so yeah so you have to tell me where do I begin what is it about for you I mean you you you like I mean look at the title like it’s a double on Tandra it’s like literally like where do like I as a person like what did I like you know what made me me right but also like it’s from someone else’s perspective like when they ask you like what happened and you go what where do I begin like where do you want me to start telling you all this [ __ ] that like we’ve seen so you know it can be very introspective or just like answering you know a question um but for me it’s it’s more about like music and the in the path that you know like I’m sure a lot of artists took because in order to be to be really good at this art thing like you can’t have like other like you can have hobbies maybe like I don’t have any hobbies right like but you have to kind of give yourself to it and it’s like why why did you do that like you didn’t you didn’t give up like chasing [ __ ] girls or maybe playing a sport or playing video games or going out at night or or whatever like for you know the money right you could have just gone to school become a lawyer or something right like you did it because like at least I did it because I love music like it hit me like it made me want to not do anything else and like that was kind of what the song was about like I want to get back to that because you spend so much time on all the business [ __ ] and answering like questions from like people that don’t know like what really what it takes to like do this like to do this full-time and to really like seek excellence in whatever whether it’s guitar or songwriting production like I just wanted like to write something about like why did I get into this and how do I get back to that feeling because there’s just so much nonsense involved and it kind of makes you forget like you know like it kind of It kind of skews your your decision making and I don’t I don’t think that’s a good thing yeah and yeah I don’t know there was something very special on that song that I started listening and oh maybe I’m questioning a lot of stuff in my life and why do I do certain things for what you know for what but you know in a good way I I you know music has this thing for me that um and I think for you guys as well that it’s you know you said that’s the reason why you’re doing it because there’s a passion in it and for me it’s it’s the same I’m not able to play or write or anything but listening brings out quite an enjoyment to to me so uh you know it’s it’s one of the cool things about music and you know on the other Spectrum on this record ceremony of fire it’s what I would call witherfall one onone it’s yeah what about it’s just one of those that’s really classic witherfall you know songwriting yeah like as far as the the chorus like I actually had to ask Jake for permission to make it more like with because it was more of a rock Chorus at first like yeah I remember when we were first yeah you’re right that that one that was totally different yeah that that song though is like that could have been on nocturns like that’s what we were trying to do with nocturns I think is that song and that’s why I really love it because I think it’s like it’s everything that when we were trying to do nocturns we’re were still figuring it all out but I think that’s what ceremony of fire is and and um it’s uh yeah it’s one of my favorites on the record I think like that’s one and I I think the video is really cool for it um but there’s so it’s just got that like that dark darkness to it but it’s also super melodic so yeah and it’s got all the neoc classical kind of [ __ ] that I grew up loving and that’s the song too that’s like what Joseph was just talking about with music is that also as you get older and especially if you’re doing this [ __ ] fulltime as we are you kind of forget a little bit about the stuff that you used to really love which is you have to go back to your head is when you were in high school and obsessed over you know I used to hear a guitar part and that’s all I listened to that night I would go back listen to the arpeggio stuff and then just try to sit there and practice it for [ __ ] hours you know no life that’s all I was doing so a Sonic ceremony I would say that if I was in high school I would be like this van [ __ ] kick ass you know so that’s that’s kind of my barometer right there too so yeah I think that song’s that song was really that song’s a lot of fun it seems like to be one of those when you play live if you play it live it’s going to work quite well with the crowd as well yeah we play it right yeah yeah we’re gonna play that one and and Jake you know as a guitar player obviously uh Melody Melody wise Melodies are important as you were saying you know you have the neoc classical stuff but was there any any time where you had um you know an idea that you didn’t think was going to work and then you showed to Joseph or someone and it would he said like no no no that’s fine I got an idea for it did that ever happen started oh yeah all the time it’s it’ll be like [ __ ] that I’ll uh because because I I’ll I’ll write down I I’ll I’ll try to record an idea at at least every day you know something just uh sit there and write you know take the time and you know 99% of the time it’s [ __ ] terrible you know but then I’ll also have these ideas and I’ll show like I was working on this I’ll show it to Joseph he’s like no dude like that’s [ __ ] cool let’s put it down and then song Start I mean um yeah hard for me to like I’m trying to think of anything like specific if that was like oh you know that that was off the Record but I’m sure it’s I’m sure it’s all over the place that happens can’t really think one that’s that’s that’s uh I mean well the C cucumber which is a part that we call it’s this which is just it’s it’s so I mean I don’t know if you’re a guitar player but any the music out there like it’s going in between these minor second intervals the entire time which is like the most God awful sound you want it’s so dissonant but I was like look you know is this this is kind of just these cords he’s like no dude [ __ ] let’s let’s use him we’ll do something with it so [ __ ] like that made that weirder Anthony came in and made it even [ __ ] uh no the The First Time Jake and I got like we were in a band before but we didn’t really write um but the first time we got together to write he showed me the verse for nobody sleep which is like a a country western [ __ ] Mexican paa [ __ ] thing that ended up being a prag metal song and then the the chorus chord progression for portrait like and we we knocked those out like the first day like ever so I think the the whole foundation of the band is like you know like a big chunk of it is Jake showing me something that no one else would ever be able to write something melodic and catchy to and then me coming bu bunch of Prague bands you know are you know like imagine like Jethro tall the guy’s like I’m gonna play my [ __ ] flute on top of this and they’re like yeah do it you know it’s but that’s what makes bands interesting is that kind of [ __ ] you know if if we just we’re huge fans of panta and that’s all we listen to and we’re like here this idea sounds like you know you’re gonna sound like a shitty version of panta so a lot of a lot of shitty versions of panta I love panta but I think there’s should only be one panta yeah and with a new album comes the tour you guys are going to be in Europe with angra uh there’s two shows in Portugal that going to be announced uh this week you guys are going to play on the 25th of October in Lisbon and then on the 26th in Porto um finally you guys are coming to Portugal so if even though he a support tour what can we expect from those shows I forgot those weren’t announced yet [ __ ] yeah yeah me too they weren’t that’s right the admat hasn’t wasn’t complete I forgot they said that was announced because angra was supposed to play a festival here next week or next weekend but that Festival got cancelled so the show was only supposed to be announced the tour the shows in Lisbon were only supposed to be announced after that Festival but because the festival is not going to happen now anyway they’re going to announce this week those shows in Portugal so I have to message to Dragon J oh yeah we gotta get those uh ad bats so we can post them um yeah D we yeah I mean all of us have played in Portugal um I love Portugal I I got stories for days but yeah I I can’t wait to to take the this this lineup especially the witherfall because we never really had a a full lineup whether it was due to Deaths or just you know General dissatisfaction with certain members or whatever like we never had a like a really legit lineup of positions that all Jael well like you know and with someone that can actually sing harmonies with me and sound in tune yeah it should be cool too because we’re going with and angra’s a great band so I think I think it’s a cool lineup you know um so yeah I I forgot that those shows weren’t announced I knew we were going to Portugal I know we were kick kick it off there but um yeah it’s GNA be it’s gonna be really cool um I don’t think I’ve ever actually played Portugal I think really even with Iced Earth and demons I don’t think we ever did any show I would remembered I cled a bomb shelter it was weird like there was this like basement bomb shelter place and Jake that was the I think we were messaging you that was the day that that the the [ __ ] Gracie stand for the 12 and the guitar play I had to hold the 12 string guitar and sing so he could play the [ __ ] thing because you know he had a had his electric guitar on it was it was a mess but it was crazy it’s crazy yeah and uh you know I’m looking forward to see to see you guys because when you guys were going to play as you mentioned the everg grade tour that was postponed a few times I was going to go to Ireland to see you guys but you know pandemic that yeah yeah yeah that [ __ ] up everything so you know I’m happy that you guys are playing Portugal properly having like two shows and uh I think it’s going to be really awesome finally and you know with angra it’s you know they’re very popular here in Portugal anyway so that’s great yeah and and we actually were playing um uh in Spain uh like like pretty close to Portugal we actually fly out Portugal for a fing show a headline date um what what day is that the 12th or I think it’s might SE 12th I think before we go to Germany uh yeah is it vo that we’re playing right outside of e yeah so that’s uh anybody in Portugal that wants to take like a two-hour drive you can get a full very good Joseph Jake thank you very much for your time all the best for witherfall and sounds of the Forgotten amazing record once again I I mean you guys really cannot put out a bad record I don’t know if even if you tried you probably couldn’t but I don’t think you would anyway it’s you know I love or at least are demos but you know I love you guys the you know the record is fantastic once again and uh you know I’m really looking forward to see you guys in Portugal so uh you know fingers crossed for everything to go well and I’ll see you guys in October and thank you very much for your time hey thanks a lot for the support man like I know you’ve been uh we’ve done a few with these with you so thanks a lot man all right thank you very much have a great day and see you guys in October all right thank you thank you bye take care [Music] bye glal Michael
