[Music] [Music] Mr trow what went down in your [Music] head the stars are in the sh [Music] listen to them to them Children of the Night Children of the Night what music [Music] the law of augmenting returns Wild Thing [Music] records ble [Music] hello hello how are you good how are you everything is good that’s good where are you at home I’m just I’m just home yeah just chilling but you’re in Australia yeah yeah yeah it’s it’s almost mid it’s a midnight here so it’s good probably should have said that could have done this early here if I no no no this is this is a perfect time yeah stay awake L anyway so oh okay very good so how is everything all good busy with the promoting for the new album yeah well we just finished um the two videos today actually so uh pretty busy recently and uh you know the law of augmenting returns uh when did you guys start working on the songs for for the album oh that’s uh I’d say 2021 actually was probably half the album was written and then like 2022 was finished off so yeah about three years ago now three years ago two years ago was finished so yeah does it take time to finish the songs um no I think it’s I think just turning into full fleshed out um songs to be ready to to be recorded is mostly the uh but writing depend depends on how the song goes how they’re feeling I guess Matt and Toby most do most of the writing so um yeah I guess if they’re vibing everything that’s happen and they finish the song in a day or they can finish the song in a month depending on how they’re feeling about that day yeah and how you know let’s go back to the beginning of the omnific how did you guys came up with the idea of having a drummer you and two Bas players uh well Matt and Toby they first met I think they were recording I think recording Matt doing his old band one of his older bands that he was in and they just had the idea to write a song together and then they recorded a pretty sure either that day or the next day and then posted it to Facebook and um it just blew up it did what 40,000 70,000 views or something something like that in like a week so so they just ran with the idea and just like yeah people want to hear more of this so let’s do that and um I came in picture later about six months later after the first EP was written but yeah the idea was just to Spur the moment thing just let’s record each other let’s write a song together and record just two bases why not yeah why not you know why not try to you know stray away from the normal or from the norm and try something different that actually works and you know when you came into the picture um were they looking what style of druming they were looking for obviously you know you you fit the band you’re in it but how was that you know that conversation for what you were looking for in the drummer yeah um uh I think think well I wasn’t there for it but um uh from what Matt and Toby have told me they had a couple people like they asked who you know just I think they just played drums and just sort of new in the scene in Melbourne and um they didn’t really work out with the sort of I guess what sort of I don’t know I what to say ability but the way that they how technical they play they need to sort of match the level and then I guess I I when I started out with my older Ben I was playing very very technical Progressive medal like a lot heavier than El niic and um Matt filled in for that band so he was playing bass so obviously but um yeah he filled in and I guess just uh liked playing with me so he asked me to um I guess sort of audition or just you know join and then we had a practice session together and was like Yeah from then it’s history yeah and when did you start playing drums you know what were the influences or what was you know the drummer that made you want really to play drums yeah um I started playing when I was 12 I think and I’m 27 now so 15 years maybe so I don’t know I’m bad at math but um but my main instrumentation for actually picking up the sticks funly enough is L from Metallica um but to do the genre that I do now and the the the most of the tech technical stuff that I do now is um Blake Richardson from between the beard and me I guess my writing style as well stems very related to the way he writes it’s just very um follows all everything that’s going on in the background like you know s or Bass Parts but does it with um sticking like parad and yeah just keeping keeping everything interesting and I guess more Technical and difficult I guess but yeah how many hours a day do you have to put you know into practicing and playing drums do you have like a schedule like a rigid kind of a schedule you know to you know to be fit for purpose um I did for a long time before we started touring um and that it was about six hours a day that was to like get to a point where I was happy with like what I want to write and what I want to play and um that was food that was during high school was about three years I did almost six hours a day of just not even just on drums just hitting like pad practice pads and stuff um and now it’s a little bit more you know when t comes around I’ll practice you know about 5 hours 4 hours a day whatever I could fit it in um I guess it gets more difficult as you get older but uh yeah it’s now it’s yeah roughly 3 hours 4 hours around to a time I do want to get to a point where I can actually have a schedule but it’s yeah just going to get to that point I guess when you were in school were you one of those annoying kids that was like peing on the desk all the time oh [ __ ] yeah I was I was sorry I can’t swear I yeah you can you can you can yeah yeah definitely I people would yell at me all the teachers would be pissed off at me for even bringing sticks I’d bring sticks to math class like why why it’s math so you don’t need drumsticks and I’m like I do I do need and and you know when when you guys are on tour um what is the worst part uh of being on tour you know for for a musician for a drummer for a person in general because as fans normally you know we see the glamour of being on stage you know the rock stars are in front of us but behind the scenes is not that glamorous no it’s not um yeah it’s just a bunch of bunch of guys just packing down really and just lugging equipment and then getting on the bus going to sleep in the same bed and then uh driveing to the next venue um for the last two that we did i’ say the hardest thing because we did Europe USA back to back um I was getting extremely fatigued because we did what 12 13 shows in Europe and then straight away did 31 in America with neble lascaris and by the I think I’d say the last seven shows I was just having to sleep after um after our set because I was just so tired just so um yeah just so tired physically like it’s not even like me mentally tired it’s just like physically I had to keep up you know hitting as hard every night um but yeah that was definitely one of the I guess [Music] more um more eye opening difficulties that I have I’ve never experienced before that point but I guess we did play what is it 40 60 47 shows in two months or something so yeah it was a good experience though you know playing all yeah absolutely amazing like yeah absolutely amazing it was like a good eye opener for reality yeah yeah how hard it can be yeah and you know on that tour you guys played Portugal um you played in Lisbon with NE Scaris how was that you know that European run for you guys because you were not well known and that though that tour kind of gave you you know a platform to show what omnic was all about how was that European shows for you guys yeah yeah every every single one of those shows was amazing um uh yeah all all the crowds came early which is great was great to see you know pretty much a full room for an opening band and um everyone actually like getting into and starting to move around especially Portugal shouting um you know just just being super vibrant so yeah just amazing amazing shows um yeah and you know going to the to the new record um on the latest single Willow the Wisp um you know there’s a a lot of stuff going on um you know there’s a lot of experimenting uh soundwise um when you guys were writing um was were all those ideas of experimenting with you know with the keyboards and the different base we’ll talk about it if you can in a bit but what will those ideas coming along as soon as you were started writing that song um yeah just I think I think mat Matt the way that Matt and Toby write they just go with the flow really um and they get inspired by different things different genres different sort of um influences that they see or hear or whatever and they put that down into um like into recording or into writing onto the computer and I guess it’s the progressive metal wave just whatever comes out comes out and if it’s you know Jazz Rock uh I don’t know Latin like it could it could be whatever it is um and it’s just that’s the song so yeah is there any like barrier or a like a boundary that you guys cannot cross musically do you think there is one in terms of genre terms genre in in terms of you know when you guys are right writing if there’s something a bit too much out of the box whatever that is uh you guys say like we cannot go that way or you as you said you just go with the flow if that’s the case I feel like we haven’t written something that’s so out of pocket that we have said no um maybe one day we will but I don’t think so far we’ve actually um like rejected a specific part or a song based on whether it um is too out of the box or anything it’s more doesn’t fit the section it doesn’t fit the just the flow of what we’re doing um see I don’t think we’ve written anything that’s um too out of the box well I guess in in other genres they’d say all of it’s out of the out of pocket but uh H yeah I think we just it is pretty much just it’s all gone how we’ve how they’ve wanted to ride it so yeah yeah and uh you know with Y one coming out you guys are going to be a bit busy you guys are coming back to Portugal on a festival uh vagos yes what is the first of all do you prefer club shows or festivals to play we have only played I think maybe two festivals um and both of those were for phenomenal so for me I do like the um the just how uh how close a club show can be and how um intimate a club show can be for a better word um but I guess off this tour we’re doing what five festivals so I guess I’ll probably have a better perspective on that question but right now I’d say um club shows are definitely more of a Vibe for me anyway yeah and you know playing a festival obviously you know there’s difference how long you play but obviously with the tours you guys were doing as a support you didn’t have much time so probably on this Festival run you guys are going to have a few more minutes to play I would guess um how do you guys you know OB you don’t have that you know not like Dream Theater you don’t have like 20 minute songs yet uh but s wise are you guys going to juggle are you guys going to go for the new record show as many songs as possible from the new album what is the idea for the upcoming tour I I think for the festivals it’s going to be mostly the new album um because that comes out what uh almost a month before um and yeah I think for us it represents our best selves right now especially writing wise and how much we’ve involved our sound so we want to play those know first want to put them put out essentially what we think is our best foot forward and um for the club shows we’ll be doing a I think a 70 minute set so we’ll be playing a lot of I guess you could call Classics or like old old stuff from um Kizmet and couple singles um released in like 201 what 18 19 um but yeah I guess those different set list is um going to be a new challenge I guess ever come but yeah it’ll mostly be for those set festivals it’ll be um uh the new album i’ say does it take a lot of maybe one old one does it take a lot of practice for the new songs normally because you know we are listening to the songs now but you guys record it you know months and months ago um so when you guys prepare for a tour you guys learn all the songs or you guys just stick to the set lists that you’re going to play um but yeah we pretty much just try and get the um the set list as best as possible um and plan for whatever whatever we play is always thought what thought through you know months in advance so we have a set list we know we’re going to play those songs play those songs I haven’t played some I haven’t played any of the songs of sonus for probably two years now cuz yeah we just don’t see maybe we we say do like a 10 year because that’s almost what two years away from a 10 year 10 year um 10 years of sonus so maybe we’ll go back and play bit of son but yeah I haven’t touched that EP for a long time personally does it take you know when you go back to when you listen to those you know songs you haven’t played in while is it easy for you to get back on the groove of you know whatever Fields you play and Rhythm patterns is it easy to to go back to to those songs or you need to listen again in trying to remember how you play them yeah for for some of them for well for this album I hadn’t played it since I recorded it which was back in March and some of the that I wrote I’m just like [ __ ] what did I do I have to like literally look at my midi and go ah I did this this is sticking and normally about halfway through the field I remember like my brain just remembers the muscle memory I’m like a cool cool cool it is this easy easy I know how to do that now and once it gets back in my head I run it slowly just build it back up to speed um but yeah these new songs have got a lot of uh a lot of hard feels for me spe specifically and just takes a bit of time to get back into the groove but what it’s there it’s there so yeah how how long before the tour starts did you guys do rehearsals for the you know for the tour yeah uh normally about I think a month and a half roughly but that’s like once a week it’s not like um too too hectic most of like we all practice at home by ourselves anyway um it’s just trying to get the full Vibe of the whole like what we want to do on this tour and um any like sort of like random ideas like for Showmanship or whatever and like um like showcasing stuff for crowd crowd work stuff especially for me um it’s always good to have more PRS than less with the boys um but yeah so I’d say like a month and a half we do like once a week and then by the last week I’d prefer to do like three in one week before we leave just to really lock in and know what we’re doing yeah and present present the best show that we can yeah do you have any dream um band that you would like to go on tour with dream band yeah um well between the Barrett and me that’s uh number one we’ve already toured with him in Australia but to do America with them would be phenomenal um and um yeah just it’s good enough number one yeah number one and so good and you know you were saying that a lot of the songs were already written in 2021 are you are you know the other guys always putting down ideas uh for new music um how do you guys do you guys exchange ideas on a regular basis how does it work um I guess recently there’s been no ideas for the past I think about year and a half oh about no since yeah since even before the recording of the album um I think it’s just more like taking a break so I think what what they do mostly is take a break do all the recording all the all the album stuff get it released and once they know that that’s all out of the way and it’s like less stress on the actual like releas path they can just you know start to relax and write some stuff and be free and creative and sometimes that’s that’s hard to um to do especially when you’re constantly um you know making release plans for stuff you’ve done a year and a half ago so you’re just like oh it doesn’t it doesn’t doesn’t yeah doesn’t doesn’t it doesn’t free you creatively it makes you feel like you’re a little bit behind but once once all that’s out I feel like they’re going to start um like once the album’s out they’re going to start writing again anyway yeah cool and uh you know when it comes to being in the band um is the is what it’s happening with omnific it’s everything that you envision of being in a band or it’s worse or you know you were expecting some stuff different um I didn’t really for my expectations it was more just wanting to play shows it didn’t really have an idea about what goes on in the background and then I think when we did our first European tour in 2019 it was very much a if you don’t like it now just don’t do it if you don’t like what the tour is like um but we all ended up loving like like being like on the bus or just whatever and just being at different cities all the time um but yeah definitely um like after show stuff or like uh packing down and like the how quick it all can go was definitely eye opener it’s very very fast-paced yeah gu can be it can be difficult at times but it’s it’s manageable considering what we’re doing yeah it’s understandable I think when we’re young you know going on a bus or being on a bus for you know 3 weeks four weeks it’s fine when you get older M no defin it’s a rough well I’m only 27 right now so it’s ask me again in another three years I’ll be completely different answer well next time you guys put out the record we’ll talk again and see how your mind is about it all right jum thank you very much for your time all the best for the omnific hopefully I’ll see you guys at Vago metal Fest uh in August uh if you don’t see there you know hopefully on another upcoming tour kto guys might have planned that hasn’t been announced I have no idea if there’s any plans after the summer to come back to Europe um is there any plans uh not for Europe not not not this year I don’t think I don’t think we’re g to be back this year unfortunately okay so um everybody in Europe This is a chance this year to see the omnific otherwise only 2025 probably yeah yeah so come down now yeah that’s a selling point all right Jerome thank you very much all the best and I hope to see you soon all right thank you thank you so much than by Pleasure everyone [Music] M Wild record Law of augmenting returns [Music] King [Music] Children of the Night he will live through the
