[Music] vocs want BL Jerry contrell hello Jerry hey George how are you good man very good um you know let’s start talking and um obviously that’s why we here uh you just home from a US tour it was July August and September how did the tour go uh what was that I was the tour that you just did in the US oh yeah yeah yeah it was you know we had a a great great time on that tour uh you know we hit hit the road kind of did a little uh little preview leg I guess uh you know before the record came out and uh uh monana for a couple months uh did about seven weeks of touring uh shows were great uh it was a fun Bill and and uh uh I’ve got three new members and in my my touring band so uh we hadn’t really really uh we’ve known each other a long time but we hadn’t really done shows together so it was nice to had the opportunity to kind of settle in and break break break in with each other you know and uh uh really excited for the rest of the year it’s a it’s a good unit yeah and you know speaking of the new record I want blood uh it’s a fantastic record for a start you know from start to finish you know great great songs uh it’s a bit heavier than Brighton your previous record um when you start the songwriting process you realized that it was going to be a navier record so to say I probably kind of got an inkling that it was gonna that it wanted to follow that path you know pretty soon uh probably within the first month of writing you know because that’s the kind of stuff I was coming up with so like oh that’s kind of cool all right so uh you I never really uh I never really sit down uh in the writing process with the intention of trying to write a specific thing you know or try to or specific sound I just I just get into the uh the creative process and see where it takes me you know um and it’s kind of fun that way because uh uh you’re always going to be surprised and and kind of takes the pressure off it you don’t have to uh uh of like you know what you’re creating you just get in motion and and start making up some music and and uh often times you know that period of time that you’re writing it in that’s the cool thing about records is it’s kind of a little bit of a time capsule of that period of time and those people that you made the record with in their lives so um all of that stuff kind of bleeds its way into the music you know and uh uh but you know you you you probably start to figure probably start to figure it out you know within the first couple of months of writing what of what a which way an album might want to go uh as you mentioned you know bright Brighton obviously is a is a different kind of rock and roll record and uh you know expresses a different kind of side of me and and this kind of you know delves into the more kind of heavy hard hit stuff and um but you know that’s that’s that I do you know so shouldn’t be that that much of a surprise when that happen but you know if you’re not going to guide it um uh guide it and just follow where it takes you uh you know uh uh it’s it’s always cool to see which direction going to take you cuz like like I say I don’t sit down I don’t sit down with the intention of making a this kind of so but but you know it usually takes about three four months to to write for me when I’m doing a record before I even see the band or get with a get with who I’m going to make the record with I spend that much time on my own just making sure I’ve got enough material that sounds like sounds like it’s at least most of a record or if not all of a record uh that’s that’s that I feel good about uh to go in with and so uh you know uh part through part of the way through that process it’s gonna you know it’s going to give you a couple of road signs you know we’re like Hey we’re going right here or we’re going left here you know and you just follow it you know yeah and uh you know I I took some notes from some of the songs um when I was listening to it I listened to the record a couple times and the song Let It Die is you know it’s the Riff it’s very heavy Sabbath almost like and that solo with the w pedal it’s absolutely delicious to hear you know are were you a fan of of Sabbath you know what inspired that song oh yeah you know it’s well documented my love of Sabbath uh um you know I think most most rock rock and roll music artists of uh of my generation uh have a healthy healthy respect of you know Black Sabbath so uh yeah I mean you know I hear that it also kind of really makes me sound it really makes me kind of hear hear my hometown you know uh uh you know uh in like the late 80s early 90s you know it [ __ ] it sounds like it sounds like that the Northwest and like the late late 80s and it smells like the pet sound you know so you can hear you can hear the seagull you know in that riff you know it’s [ __ ] good yeah yeah it’s it’s you know I think the whole record it’s all highlights for me but you know the title track the lyrics you know I don’t fight fair there’s no rural summary the job inside you only rent the crown you know that’s I absolutely love these lines thank you what what you know this is is like a you know this sound like just come for me and I’ll give you you may try but you’re not going to get it you’re not going to beat me is it like the message of it yeah well you know it’s like uh you know when you’re writing you’re you know and I try to do this you know like sometimes it’s easier to kind of spell stuff out for folks and other things are a little more obvious but I like to I like to intentionally kind of write with a couple of different story lines and threads going on you know what I mean so it’s not really NE not necessarily one story there’s multiple characters going going into a into a songwriting process and and multiple story lines that are being told that way it’s kind of interesting uh and leaves things uh open to interpretation and and I I think that’s really cool also kind of protects me in a way of uh of uh you know I still get to keep something for myself you you know which is where which is the seed of the song and and why it came out the way that it did as best I can remember because you know you you got to you got to think like you’re hearing it now but I’m kind of done listening to this record I mean like like I’ve listened to it so many times and now I’m touring it so once you get to the tour mode uh where you’re actually touring it that’s a whole other phase of of the record and I love the record I just I did a relisten yesterday because I because I haven’t heard it in a minute but I kind of needed to not hear it for a minute you know I mean so so uh but I do like to keep a little bit to myself you know uh you know that song is just kind of you know generally speaking uh you know about [ __ ] being alive you know just be the life and stuff you know it’s it’s not a not a permanent thing uh you know there is no Finish Line until you are done until you’re don’t exist here anymore and that’s something we all share so you know life is impermanent and and it could be rough and it could be hard and uh no doubt and that is that that that element’s in there too but it’s also beautiful and wondrous and like what are you gonna do with your time you know you know are you gonna are you gonna go for the crown even though you can only rent it yeah are you GNA go for the crown you know like uh you know it’s kind of a little bit of a challenge it’s a song that kind of challenges challenges uh uh you know what what he what what are you going to do with your time here yeah you know but that also shows confidence confidence that you have now you know with music somehow and you know whatever is ahead of you because you know making music it’s not easy and you know I we see a lot of bands you know just laying on their past Laurels but you’re still pushing forward you still making music and this album I want blood you know you went for it it’s really you know yeah well I I I I appreciate that you feel that way about it because because I certainly do uh you know I’m I’m I’m really excited about it and when I came off you know I’ve also got to give give credit to to the group uh in the time that I made Brighton in as well that was a that was a big step up too I think from you know from the two previous records I did 20 years uh prior you know so um and I think this is another step up so it’s it’s cool you always want to feel like you’re uh I guess you hope you feel like you’re still growing and you’re still getting trying to get better at least at least you’re trying to so uh and I think that I am you know I think that I am getting better so um you I’m excited about it and I you know as as long as those boxes are I feel confident throw putting it out in the world under my name you know and like hey check this out you know this is this is absolutely the best I could do at this time I could not made a better I could not have made a better record that’s a good feeling because no matter who likes it how successful it is or not uh who hates it whatever I’m good I put out a [ __ ] record I’m I’m stoked on so and uh and I think some people if if if I go into it satisfying that criteria there’s probably a good proportion of people who who have maybe checked out you know some stuff of mine in the past yeah they might dig this too so yeah you know when I was listening to the album for for me you know this is was this is you at your Peck at your best songwriting wise and and I I mean it from riffs from Melodies From lyrics you know and your singing on this record you know let’s talk about it because you’re absolutely nailing it you know it’s you sound amazing you know what’s happened what happened yeah well you know it’s uh it’s a different thing you know granted you know uh you know there’s there’s there’s always going to be a close analog uh uh to the way that I operate within Alice uh when I’m working outside the band and so uh just because of the space that I occupy and also some of the things that that that that I learned there and that that uh you know just my work ethic that I share with the GU and you know there’s there’s a lot that I take with me you know when I when I when I get out of the boat and and take a swim you know you know so uh so you know uh you know I I sing a lot there but it is a little bit different when you’re kind of center stage in fronting a band and I I think the maybe uh you know the the the focal point you know is right on you so like you know I I I wanted to make sure that I took a took a you know at least put some work in to try to be be a little bit more consistent in my singing being a little stronger and uh uh you know so started doing some different vocal stuff uh with a coach out uh in California and uh uh she’s really great and uh and and I did on on Brighton as well and you know I’ve continued working with her and and uh you know this material requires a little more edge and a little bit more power so that’s generally that’s generally where what I leave for the second voice in my in my writing I I I’ll I’ll stay I’ll take care of the kind of smooth middle stuff and then throw the guy with the heater who’s got who’s got the edge uh up top I naturally don’t have a lot of that so it was kind of fun playing around with some of that stuff and and uh but again go back to we talking about earlier like you you want to feel like you’re making some progress doing some things maybe you haven’t done before and and you know putting a challenge up to yourself like hey can I pull this off and and and and uh you know being being uh satisfied when you walk away like [ __ ] I didn’t think I could pull that off that [ __ ] sound that’s that’s good you you know so yeah yeah because you know on the on the song it comes uh you start a capella which is you know not everyone is able to pull that off yeah well you know there’ss of some previous work like the the end of anger Rising on I think on like end and you know there might be another couple of things like that too so but it is an unusual start you know you you really don’t know what’s coming until it [ __ ] hits yeah and then and you think you know it’s you know it is it is an intense record you know it’s 40 what is it 44 minutes and or 46 minutes and uh 46 minutes of a pretty intense you know no letup music you know and so like it kind of gives you a little bit of a like okay is he gonna [ __ ] chill the [ __ ] out here or what and then no no I’m not but you know that song that song it comes you know you start like aella then it’s a bit more of a slow Bast and then halfway through you change the Rhythm and you speed up things a bit you know and that’s the curveballs that you throw on this record that you know it’s not expected and it’s a it’s a pleasant surprise yeah I I love music like that as a fan you know stuff that that uh shifts shifts gears like unexpectedly or or takes a hard turn you know like whoa hey what the [ __ ] was that you know like that was cool I didn’t see that coming you know and uhh that’s exciting you know uh that’s a sign of good craftsmanship and and uh you know uh also not given this you know if you just when you think you’ve got the storyline you something something just comes out of nowhere and completely changes you know it’s uh film Mak is like that you know songwriting uh it’s uh you know I’m I’m a big fan of all of that stuff so um uh uh anyway I’m glad you dig it thank you and uh you know on the songs Echoes of of laughter uh the solo it’s it’s a very nice melodic tasteful guitar solo what’s normally your approach when it comes to a guitar solo on a song uh well it’s you know it’s got to be melodic you know um I’m you know uh I don’t know know I mean you know it’s it’s it’s espe solos are a real real really unique part of a song they kind of treat them like a vocal part or like a it’s it also you’re already you’re you’re generally hearing a guitar solo after you’ve already gone through a couple rounds of a of a verse uh bridge in a chorus uh in a song generally not always but like in generally you you’ve already kind of uh you know the song has already gone up in Dynamics and then dropped down and then it’s it’s already gone up again in Dynamics and need something to to lift it again you know and so that’s kind of that’s what what a solo has the opportunity to do I guess is to again uh take you to a place uh or lift in energy uh that the song the song hasn’t been to and either keep it there to the end or you know drop it back down into something else you know or uh and uh so it’s just it’s kind of a case by Case Case by case uh uh you know for for each song or whatever and uh you know I I kind of uh I I hum a lot of stuff you know like when I’m like kind of almost like I’m coming up with uh lines before I even write the lyrics uh you know I’ll Hum Melody lines while I’m putting a song together and and I generally stick pretty close to what I first initially kind of came up with you know at least the Basse pattern or whatever and uh I find that I do that when I do solos too I’ll I’ll listen to the solo section and I’ll kind of you know I’ll hum some some lines I’ll do some runs and you know some [ __ ] like that and then I’ll pick up the guitar and then I’ll I’ll take a take a run at that and then uh I usually don’t spend a whole lot of time working on them but uh I’ll I’ll try to keep it as close to I’ll try to keep it as close to what naturally happened first you know so you know uh songwriting is is about Vibe and I think solos are too it’s not I mean technique is good yeah no doubt and uh you know some guys are really [ __ ] impressive with that [ __ ] um I kind of let that skill a little bit I think you know in order to kind of go for more of a uh more of a melodic and feel approach I guess than technique so uh that’s just kind of what I do so what I’ve evolved into so you know you have more of a I really I really really dig the really dig the solos on this record there’s some really cool [ __ ] you know um uh we lean pretty heavily as you mentioned previously uh on the cry baby and we used a lot of talk box and stuff and so it was kind of fun and we you know we actually even resurrected some of old gear uh that I played in the early days some of the some of the old bogers the Bogner fish and and uh you know it seemed like it fit some of this material a little bit so you know we we leaned on some stuff that I haven’t haven’t really really they’re all things that I use but you know uh some of the a lot of these songs required a healthy dose of them yeah if you will you know what I was going to say when it comes to your solos on this record you seem to have taken Dave Gilmore approach to it which is you don’t have to be flashy you need to have that feeling and mean every note that you play and that was the feeling that I got from your solos on this record oh thanks man yeah well you know you mentioned uh you mentioned Tony before Tony iomi he’s a he’s a he’s a guy I admire you know tremendously and D David Gilmore is another guy that uh you know I hold in high regard so you know if you’re hearing that poke out a little bit definitely because I’m a fan of both of those guys so you know yeah I think the you know you know I cannot stress enough how good this record really sounds and you know he really put the effort on it and you know it kind of shows and you know it’s it’s great another song throw me a line you know that riff and the main Rhythm you know it’s very groovy very infectious almost so to say love that you know that that line that rhythm line on the song It’s [ __ ] amazing yeah it’s kind of the it’s an interesting song all the way through but like the I think the best part of is the is when the the main Rift gets reintro every time like [ __ ] yeah there he goes again awesome because it is a sick Groove you know but it’s really simple you know it’s really simple and again you know uh you know I hear a few that one I hear a little Billy Billy Gibbons in that RI you know Little Billy Gibbons maybe it’s you know it sounds it sounds great and know you already mentioned you know the people that you work with on this record you got de McKagan you got Robert rillo Mike bin you got Gil shiron Greg push you know it’s you know great guys to to work with and um you know it’s do you enjoy working with them yeah you know I mean if you notice uh you know I I’m I’m pretty lucky to be able to you know uh be able to call up some of these folks and and uh to you know have and want to make some music outside uh you know we’re all creative people and and we’re all friends too so but if you notice we’ we’ve made multiple records together you know everybody that you just mentioned so um you know I like with people that that you know and and and creating cool [ __ ] with your friends and and uh it’s fun there’s a familiarity you know because you’ve done it before and uh and in different contexts you know and uh and at different times of life you know so I was uh was really cool to to assemble some of the same same great players you know and uh number one that they had the time to do it uh number two that they were willing to mold lend themselves and mold themselves into into the blueprint that I was trying to deliver you know and uh and and made a [ __ ] great record you know so another another cool record so yeah and uh you know do you have um a guitar that you prefer or that brings some magic when you’re enter songw writing mode do you have any specific guitar for for that you know like a Lucky guitar so to say yeah I mean it can it can really be anything uh it’s it’s funny uh before I give you the obvious answer uh anytime I pick up something that I’ve never played before I always come up with something I don’t know what it is about having something new in your hand and I’m not talking about a new guitar just new to me you know what I mean it could be like an old guitar or whatever but something that I haven’t played before I I I’ll generally stumble across something uh maybe it’s just the excitement of having having a different different instrument in your hands or or maybe it provides a different sound than you’re used to kind of playing with you know um but I it really you know throughout my throughout my career I really keep coming back to the same three guitars and this record was no different like you know I love layering tones and I I love messing around with different combinations of of uh guitars amps and effects uh to you know to create tones for certain specific uh sections to build a build a song you know it’s like laying brick you know one on top of each other you can do it badly and the [ __ ] thing will fall down where you can you know if you put do it right it’ll it’ll stand forever you know so or at least a really long time you know so um but generally it’s it it keeps coming back to the two original uh uh 85 gnls that I bought in Dallas Texas in 1985 and uh and the drip West Paul that I got in the mid90s you know so those those three guitars uh and that’s kind of the G&L was was uh it was Leo Fender’s last last company before he passed after he sold his company uh Fender so the G&L was supposed to be a it was supposed to be a kind of like a uh a little bit in the in the line of like Eddie Van Halen’s kind of Frankenstein very simple guitar tremolo system one volume knob that’s it you know so Strat body uh but a little bit you know a little bit Slicker and and kind of uh faster neck you know no lacquer and uh but it was supposed to tonally be a uh tonally tonally that guitar was designed to to have some of the the some of the sound of a Les Paul mixed with a strat you know so that’s that’s what that guitar is and that’s what I really have used mostly most of my career is the G&L uh uh coupled with with a Les Paul you know that’s that’s my base sound is those those three guitars cool and uh you know to to wrap it up um what are the plans for Europe do you pretend to come to Europe to to show these new records play Life shows what are the plans absolutely uh we’re going to start uh doing a the proper the proper tour starts uh next year we do have a couple of of fun dates uh here coming up uh in uh in the third week second or third week of SE of October and uh and then we have a a handful of shows in Buenos areis I believe uh I think it’s sa Paulo and Santiago uh but that’s pretty much all I plan for this year next year we’re gonna for a couple months in the winter and then uh hopefully uh hopefully get over to uh Europe in the summer and then maybe and then see see where we go from there you know so cool very good all right Jerry thank you very much for time all the best for I want blood You Know You Want Blood you got it I know you’re an e DC fan so another one of my favorite bands yeah there you go all good yeah it’s you know again uh it’s a fantastic record you got a wonderful piece of art in your hands and I’m sure uh the fans music fans in general will appreciate this record if they give it a spin because it’s really really really good thank you very much for your time all the best and I hope to see you back in Portugal it’s been a long time since you’ve been here a while it’s been a while so hopefully fingers crossed next year in a festival or something we can see you can see you back right on man all right thank you very much have a great day and I hope to see you next year all right
